Investigating Lake Iluka is an interactive multimedia package designed for secondary school students to help them develop investigation and problem solving skills. A simulated lake environment on CD–ROM, it can be used to support the teaching of biology, geography and ecology.

Students can:

  • investigate the various ecosystems of the lake
  • take physical, chemical and biological measurements
  • collect information about individual animal and plant species in and around the lake
  • see and hear news reports, expert views and local opinions on a variety of issues relating to the lake and its ecology

Inquiry and problem-solving techniques have been embedded in the package through case studies of ecological scenarios presented to the user via media reports of problems posed directly to the user. Each scenario can be investigated using the package tools.

It is expected that users will develop a broad array of scientific investigation skills using this realistic simulation.

One of the unique features of this package is the facility for users to generate their own customised reports, which can be refined and presented independent of the package.

Embedded tools allow students to sample scientific data in each of the environments. They also have a field journal where they can take notes.

The field studies centre provides access to a variety of media that students use to resolve their investigations.
